Nose Bidet Anyone??

"What the heck is a nettie-pot?" my mom asks me.

"A what...I have no idea what you are talking about." I tell her.

"You know, on your nasal spray post, some guy suggested you try a nettie-pot" She said.

"I dunno" I replied, "I guess I'll google it". I said.

Well let me tell you my friends, this...........

Photobucket
.....a Neti Pot!

What the heck? Does anyone else find this photo...well...a tad disturbing? And people make fun of ME about my nasal spray. I was freaked out. And then I burst into fits of hysterical laughter. And then I squinted at the photo and thought "OMG, is that water going up one nostril and out the other?!?!?!" So back to google I went. I googled "neti pot" and then clicked the images button. Holy cow! The water DOES go in one nostril and out the other! Does that freak out anyone else besides me? Kind of like that kid in the middle school cafeteria who used to snort spaghetti noodles up his nose and cough it up through his mouth.

Oh, the Netti Pot.... For years now my allergist and my GP told me I needed this crazy thing. Well, I broke down, hit a Walgreens and bought the darn thing along with some packets of saline ( all under $20 bucks). Mine looks much different than this (more like a little plastic tea pot, there is another kind too, like a squeeze bottle) and gave it a whirl...
It sends DH running, covering his eyes when I do it! It looks as bad as the picture... It does get the "junk out". I blow gently after flooding each nostril....... BUT for me, it only lasts a few minutes (feeling clear) and I feel like I need to use it again. I guess I could describe the feeling, like when you dive into a pool or lake and get a nose full....... The DR. told me to use it before I spray all the Astilin, Rinacourt, and various nose sprays in there. He said it helps the nose sprays work better................. (because the passage way is clear).......
I'm still on the fence, I guess it it does work if I do it just before I go to sleep. The box says you can do this several times a day, no side effects. Cathy, your co-workers will want you back on the sprays again! It has a HUGE following, many people love it... I like the nose sprays better... Hope this helps, sorry about the spelling!

When I was at the doc 2 weeks ago with a sinus infection she recommended I cleaned my sinus daily by putting water in my palm and snorting it - basically "getting water up my nose" like in swimming.

It is not pleasant. But it even has a technical name - nasal lavage.

Up your nose with a plastic hose? It looks funky and your friends, such as I, will laugh at you. Having said that; do it in the privacy of your own home and never talk about it when you visit.

Um, yeah. In theory, it is supposed to work well. But what about the fact that if your nose is stuffed, the water CAN"T get through to the other side and just runs back down the SAME nostril? Because that happens. So I don't really get it. If your nose is clear enough for it to run through and down the other side, what would be the point of using it in the first place? Certainly a bottle of Afrin seems a bit more polite at least. But if you DO resort to this, oh please, please: POST PICTURES. That would totally be keepin it real -

Good read! (your post and the comments) I have a chronic sinus/ear problem and I've thought about trying this to flush out my sinuses, but I'm pretty skeptical. Plus I just don't know if I could bring myself to do it! I'm sure it wouldn't help my ears anyway!
