Photohunt Saturday- Free

Photobucket

This is Denali, the Great One. At 20,320 feet it is the highest mountain in North America. In 1896 the mountain was officially named Mount McKinley, after future U.S. President William McKinley......why, I have no idea. I couldn't think of one thing of significance that President Mckinley did....so I looked him up.

The first person who can remember any lasting legacy of McKinley's political career (there are a couple besides the travesty of changing this mountain's name) I will send you a FREE box of Sailor Boy Pilot Bread crackers!! No cheating and looking at wikipedia!

*USA and Canada only...I'm too poor to send crackers overseas.

Hmmm, contributions McKinley made? How about he was assassinated an hour from my home, in Buffalo, NY? I know THAT. I think that's the ONLY thing I know about him without looking him up. I think THAT is probably contribution enough for having the audacity to change "Denali" to "McKinley" - hmmm, wonder if it was an Alaskan who did him in...can I look THAT up????

It's Gorgeous!

Did it have something to do with him designating the mountain part of a National Park?

Spectacular photo, even though McKinnley didn't have anything to do with it. Have a wonderful week.

Then-Gov McKinley had policy that the guy who named the mountain liked. It was named before he was president, before he was assassinated, and even today, I think most people recognize that. The only think keeping the name from changing is a couple jerks living in Ohio.

The most important thing McKinley ever did was get shot. It's Mt. Denali, as far as most of Fairbanks is concerned.

(Also, minor correction. Denali is at around 20k feet. Everest is just shy of 30k feet.)

KC is right....Denali is 20,320 feet. I accidently stated the height of the South Buttress. Must be all that sudafed I'm taking. Also....I am pretty sure that Denali has a higher vertical rise than Everest....another thing for Alaskans to be proud of.
