Oodles of Doodles

.

This is a photo of my desk. I am a doodler. I always have been for as long as I can remember. If it sits still long enough, I'll doodle on it. I doodle in class, while on the phone or at home. I am the person you see at meetings with pen in had doodling intricate lines and swirls in the margins of my training binder.

The more boring the meeting the more I doodle. I have gotten in trouble for it in the past in high school and in college. Teachers tend to think if your doodling your not paying attention. That is just not the case. If I am in your meeting and I am not doodling you can be sure I haven't been listening.

Recently I read an article about doodling and I feel vindicated. information than those who tried to sit and listen.

Jackie Andrade, a cognitive psychologist at the University of Plymouth, UK, has done studies and believes that doodling is good for your concentration and keeps you from daydreaming when you are bored. There are people who have tried to make a science out of interpreting doodles.

According to them ambitious doodler doodles Triangles, sun, shadings and planets. A free spirited doodler doodles abstract shapes, repeats doodles and fills circles. An impatient doodler doodles Hearts, flowers, stars, question marks and 3D boxes. A romantic doodler doodles flowers, lips, star and heart doodles.

Insecure doodlers doodle spiders, bricks walls and webs dominate doodles of an insecure doodler. There is also interpretation for individual objects.

So after looking at my doodles and reading the interpretation website I see that they think I am a gentle, romantic, free spirited, yet impatient doodler who is keen on fostering social relationships and strike amicable friendship. Interesting.

Your doodles are actually REALLY artistic, some of them. I think they're pretty cool. Me, I doodle chickens who look like deranged dinosaurs, and the alphabet. Always the alphabet, and words. What does it say about people who doodle chickens and words? Never mind, I don't really want to know.

I was a major doddler when I was young, but not so much any more -- I guess I've given in to the daydreams at this point! Your doodles are much nicer than mine ever were.

I also got in trouble in high school for doodling. Math class. Yecch!

I doodle flowers, hearts and letters. I also doodle geometric designs. Maybe that habit was picked up from Geometry class. If I was doodling geometric figures, my teacher would think at least I was thinking about geometry. LOL!

I LOVE your doodles! They look a lot like mine in shape. I am a major doodler!! I went to a 5-day workshop last week and actually brought paper to doodle on to keep me from doodling all over the manuels they gave us.

I'm a doodler too! My students used to gather round me the day after a faculty meeting, clamoring to see my doodles. :)

I am a compulsive doodler too. If I am doodling, I can pay attention. If I am not, I don't hear a word that is being said. I've gotten so much flack for it over the years. I think I should print out the article you linked to and hand out copies to anyone who argues with me about it!!!
Your doodles are way prettier than mine! I mostly doodle 3-d ribbons that lace in and out of each other. I have notebooks full of them.

Love your doodles! As a former teacher, I can attest that doodling or having something in one's hands (like playdough, squeeze balls, etc.) help students listen while providing much needed tactile relief!

veldeYour doodles are fab!

I, too, am a lifelong compulsive doodler and have gotten in trouble for it by teachers.

Do you also play Tetris? Because my other doodling friends also seem to enjoy the old school Gameboy game of Tetris.

Considering your love for doodling, I think you'll get a good laugh at this video. It's an old Dutch commercial for an insurance company :)

That is how I started drawing mandalas seriously - it all began with doodles in class. And that 4th photo of yours is definitely a mandala. Currently on my blog is a V-day heart - an "out-take" of my regular symmetrical mandalas.

I check your blog regularly - I love the landscapes, your artistic eye when taking photos, and your dogs playing in the snow. Your son is cute :) All such great pics.
