Old Burials

.

Here are a few photos of some old burials. Way back when, the Inupiaq people used to lay their dead out on the tundra and cover them with driftwood. You can still find some standing. The first two photos are from Sisualik and the second two photos are from near Akulaaq Lagoon. Both Locations are within Cape Krusenstern National Monument.

I went to a Chevon workshop bout 30 yrs ago, for the village corp I worked for then about heating oil, safety, etc. The instuctor told us what an old man from King Island had told him: Before the white man came we put our dead above ground on platforms to keep the animals away, we lived underground; when the white man came we buried our dead underground and started living above ground. We've never been warm since.
