Ok, here it is. Sorry it took so long. I was in Anchorage for for a few days and then I spent the last few days in bed with the plague taking nourishment through a straw. Lotsa fun.
In the end we did not have enough time to go to both Walmat and Carrs/Safeway while we were in Anchorage so we just went to Walmart and then I had him calculate the difference between the two. It will give you a good idea of the difference in price in the two regions.
And to asnwer the question about baggage.....when you origin and destination are both within the state of Alaska, Alaska Airlines lets you have three 50lb checked bags for free.

Very interesting. While we were in Bethel our niece who came up with us got a UTI. Dave brought her home a jug of cranberry juice. $18.00. We went into Anchorage the next day and 2 jugs at Costco were 9.89 or something like that.
WOW! Big difference in prices! I see why you do this for sure!
Holy Mole, I know it costs a lot to get store items shipped up to Kotzebue, but good grief, you really get ripped off by the AC!!
Thank goodness you're allowed (3) 50 lb. suitcases on Alaska Airlines!!! Since you have to fly them all of the time, that is nice perk.
I love "Tundra Comics", I met Chad at the State Fair in 2008, what a fun character!
Hope you feel better soon.
Good Gracious!!!! No wonder you hunt and fish and live off the land as much as possible.
Just went to Walmart this morning Auburndale, Florida
Pillsbury cake mix 1.00
tub of chocolate frosting 1.50
tube of white icing 2.98
I will not complain any more.....
Liz :/
hope you are feeling better :)
Wow! I'm not sure what the Canada/US exchange rate is off the top off my head but that does seem pretty pricey....comparable to what I've seen in areas of the Canadian arctic and sub-arctic. Definitely can make food choice and healthy eating a challenge that's for sure.
pizza, soda, ice cream, cookies, spam, doritos...
sad state of affairs up there. very expensive and very unhealthy.
how about comparing prices (and calories and nutritional value) of those items to things like frozen veggies, frozen berries, whole wheat flour, bulk raisins, whole grain crackers, filtered or carbonated water, bags of nuts...
Some of the Wal-Mart prices are close to what we pay at my closest Wal-Mart in South Dakota.
OMG....that IS a HUGE difference in price! It's definitely worth it to stock up at Walmart when you can....like my friend Kathy said, thank goodness for the 3 free suitcases!!!
You forgot our 6% sales tax... :)
That's about 3 times the cost that I pay for food in Chicago, although our sales tax is 10.25%.
What does an average family of 4 spend per month on food?
Also, how does land ownership work in Alaska? Do you own the land that your house is on? Do you have a mortgage? Do you pay rent?
Michelle
TT...I agree with Kathleen Taylor the prices at Walmart are not much different. Tillamook Cheese 5 lb block 11.99...plus in SD there is a 6% sales tax too! We live in Montana but the closest Walmart for us is about 2 hrs away...
