I am Balanced, Secure, and Realistic...Ummm, yeah.

Balanced, Secure, and Realistic.

Impressionism is a movement in French painting, sometimes called optical realism because of its almost scientific interest in the actual visual experience and effect of light and movement on appearance of objects. Impressionist paintings are balanced, use colored shadows, use pure color, broken brushstrokes, thick paint, and scenes from everyday life or nature.

People that like Impressionist paintings may not alway be what is deemed socially acceptable. They tend to move on their own path without always worrying that it may be offensive to others. They value friendships but because they also value honesty tend to have a few really good friends. They do not, however, like people that are rude and do not appreciate the ideas of others. They are secure enough in themselves that they can listen to the ideas of other people without it affecting their own final decisions. The world for them is not black and white but more in shades of grey and muted colors. They like things to be aestically pleasing, not stark and sharp. There are many ways to view things, and the impresssionist personality views the world from many different aspects. They enjoy life and try to keep a realistic viewpoint of things, but are not very open to new experiences. If they are content in their live they will be more than likely pleased to keep things just the way they are.

Halloween Cousins

Photobucket
Wednesday was the night of Northwest Arctic Borough Mayor Siikauraq Whiting's annual Halloween party for extended Harris/Wilson family. This is a huge family and even with only a fraction of the cousins in attendance it was a full house. Uyaana is one of those cousins. He was happy to be able to put on his Halloween Costume early. For the last four Halloween's Uyaana has been a power Ranger. He wanted to be one again this year but I couldn't find a costume big enough for him, so this year he is a ghoulish vampire thing. Here is Uyaana with Siikauraq, his first cousin, once removed. Uyaana has literally hundreds of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd cousins. Poor kid is gonna need a mail order bride.

Photobucket
This handsome fella is a 3rd cousin. Can you see the resemblance?

Photobucket
I'm not sure how Darth is related but I'm sure it's there somewhere.

Photobucket
Here is Katak. Another cousin. Second cousin once removed to be exact. I wonder if anyone ever told her that clowns are creepy.

Photobucket
Probably.

Sleep Debt

Like many people, I have the bad habit of staying up late no matter what time I have to get up in the morning. I usually get up at 7am to get ready for work and I rarely ever go to bed before midnight sometimes later. Weekends are usually my time to catch up on sleep but every now and then I don't make it to the weekend. Between working full time, taking three classes, being a mom, and all whatever else sleep often gets neglected.

Last night I wanted to watch Bizarre Foods on the Travel Channel. There was going to be a new episode on at 8pm. The living room TV was already in use so I figured I would watch it in my bedroom. I started watching it and I was getting sleepy. During the commercials I would doze off. Well, during one commercial I apparently dozed off and I didn't wake up until 5am. I slept through almost the whole night from around 8:30pm to 5am on top of the covers with all my clothes on jeans, socks, shirt, everything. Sad. Looks like my sleep debt finally caught up to me.

So this is my excuse as to why I didn't post anything yesterday. My original plan was to watch my TV show and then go back downstairs, edit and upload some photos, post them to the blog and let the dogs out for a while. Needless to say that never happened. So I will try and get that post up later when I have a chance.

Storming

Photobucket
I took these photos on Saturday. I didn't take any pics today cause there was nothing to look at but sideways blowing snow.

Photobucket
It is definitely starting to look like a winter wonderland out there. This storm is supposed to last for a couple days.

Photobucket
It always warms up to storm. The last few days have been pretty cold, in the single digits, but not yet below zero. This morning when I woke up it was a fairly warm 20 degrees and the wind had picked up coming from the southeast.

Photobucket
Wind from the southeast is a storm wind. It brings us blizzards. Winds from the north bring a dry, biting cold. This storm is relatively minor, just an intro to winter. The more it snows and blows the more I love it. There is just something about a strong storm. I love the power of it. I love to stand outside and let the wind blow me around....that is until stray roofing tin gets ripped off buildings and flies through the air like a guillotine.

Photobucket
I'll try and take some stormy pics tomorrow...well I guess technically that would be today. I think I need to hit the hay.

Caribou Crossing

Photobucket
Today there were caribou crossing the ice from the mainland to the peninsula that Kotzebue sits on. This route brought them close to town and they caused quite the spectacle.

Photobucket
The caribou crossed in a steady stream for hours.

Photobucket
This is the most caribou I have ever seen at one time.

Photobucket
I wish the pictures I took were clearer but it was blowing snow and the light was low and it was freaking cold out and my hands were freezing.

Photobucket
As I said they caribou caused quite a commotion. There were cars lined up along the shore watching them pass by. There was also a big rush of hunters who took off to get some. There were lots of gun shots. Enough to make you nervous.

Prints

The holidays are approaching and that means so are the craft fairs. Last year I decided to try selling some of my prints at the various holiday craft fairs that we have here in Kotzebue. I surprised myself by selling quite a few. It's kind of neat to know that someone wants to buy something that you created and hang it on their walls. So this weekend I will be spending some time going back through a years worth of photos and deciding which ones I would like to get prints of and in what sizes. I usually sell the prints with a simple black mat.

Uploading pics is a long tedious process because as many of you have heard me whine about before...Kotzebue's internet sucks.

I am still waiting for my camera charger to arrive. I had a yellow slip in my post office box today telling me I had a package but the post office counter was CLOSED (!!!!!) "due to illness". Our post office runs so short staffed here that you never know if it is going to be closed for whatever reason. Hopefully the charger will be here soon and I will be able to start taking photos again.

We are approaching the time of short days and low sun so the lighting will be a bummer for a few months....remember all those blue hued photos last year? I could photoshop the exposure, but then that wouldn't be keeping it real, would it?

Fishing and Fingers

Photobucket
Today Uyaana and I went hooking for tomcods. We had to go to the store first so I could buy those spikey things that you put on your boots. Last thing I needed was to slip on the ice and mess my knee up some more.

Photobucket
There were quite a few people here and there on the lagoon behind town. When I first got out there the tomcods were biting pretty good.

Photobucket
I caught 12 and then it slowed down.

Photobucket
I decided to move to another spot on the other side of first bridge.

Photobucket
There were more people fishing over there.

Photobucket
The fishing wasn't much better over there but there were other kids for Uyaana to play with so he was happy. Then I decided to go home and cook dinner. I left Uyaana with a friend of mine because he wanted to keep playing with the kids. He came home about an hour and a half later and he was crying like crazy. He and one of his friends were taking loose pieces of ice and hammering them with big rocks. He accidentally smashed his finger with the rock. His whole pinkie finger was purple and swollen. I really thought he broke it so I packed him off to the clinic to get it xrayed.

Photobucket
Lucky for him it wasn't broken but it is still really swollen and tender. He has this lovely splint on his finger now.

Photobucket
He wanted a picture taken of it from both sides.
